My second TRIATHLON ... what a blast!

Exercise Log .... Created May 28, 2003

Success is not measured by weeks, months, or years.
Success is measured by reaching your goals!

I've known for quite some time that I needed to lose weight, but I was not physically and emotionally ready to do it.  My final motivation to start this journey started on Tuesday February 5th, 2002.

I was speaking with a co-worker who had just come back from being off sick for quite a while and he told me he was in danger of losing his sight because of his diabetes.  He told me more of his story, and that kick in the pants I needed to get motivated was there.  Because I had Gestational Diabetes when I was pregnant with both my sons, PLUS the fact that I was overweight put me at risk of getting diabetes.  I DIDN'T WANT IT!

I phoned the WW information office and got this great woman on the phone who filled me in on the program.  I had done WW many times before starting when I was a pre-teen, and it had always been the Fruits/Vegetables, Protein, Breads, etc. plan, which I found difficult to follow.  She explained the basics of the new Winning Points program and began to hook me.  Then she said to me ... and remember, with this new plan there are no forbidden foods, if you want a Tim Horton's Apple Fritter, for example, she said you can have it, you just have to count the points for it.  She said if you really have a Tim Horton's craving, have 3 TimBits instead, at a point a piece it's a much better way of dealing with the craving.

I was given the meeting information and thought I'd join on the Wednesday, but on my drive home I said ... NO, I'M DOING IT TONIGHT!  So I got home, told my husband my plans, and that he was not to sabotage me by saying "are you sure you're supposed to be eating this", etc, and headed off to my first meeting.

When I got there, the place was beginning to fill up.  I signed all my paperwork, paid my $38, picked up a complete food companion and a fast food book, and walked off to the scale.  When I weighed in I was 259.2 pounds.  The last time I recall weighing myself on a scale was when I was pregnant with my second son, and I was around 247 at that time (I didn't gain with my second pregnancy, and only 12 pounds with my first).  So I figured I'd maintained a weight range of 12 pounds for 3.5 years.

As a newbie, I hesitated on where to sit, so moved to an open seat in the back row and sat down to read my literature.  The meeting then started, and the "brag" session started where people told their losses that day (including some gains too), and some people told their totals so far, some were 20, 50 and a couple 100+ pounds.  Talk about motivation!

As the meeting progressed, I got more and more motivated by the members and our leader Kelly.  Kelly has an enthusiasm for weight loss that I had never seen in a leader when I was a WW member before.  At this meeting they kept talking about a tonne party that they were having the following week, because as a group, in 22 weeks, the group lost 2000 pounds together.  So they were having a pot-luck party to celebrate the next week.  By the time I left the meeting, I was pumped and ready for my first week.
